A Hollywood Walk of Fame honorary star plaque was presented to Princess Cruises and the original cast of the “The Love Boat”  “in recognition of their contributions to the history of television and support for the preservation of the Walk of Fame,” reports the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.

The beloved television show premiered May, 1977. Set aboard a cruise ship, the show featured stories of romance, “hi-jinks and adventure on the high seas that involved characters portrayed by Hollywood’s biggest stars of the day.”

“The Love Boat” was a major hit after the original pilot show aired, and “continued for 10 seasons and was one of the highest-rated prime-time television shows in the country,” the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce noted.

If you were a fan back then, you can probably still hear the theme song in your mind…. “Love, exciting and new….”

Because of the amazing success of the show,  Princess Cruises  became a household name, and “It continues to be known as the “Love Boat” cruise line today.” The two original ships featured in the television show were Pacific Princess and Island Princess; however, “as the show grew in popularity ‘The Love Boat’ was filmed aboard many Princess ships at exotic destinations around the globe.”

Congratulations to Princess, and to the stars who played the main characters we loved: Gavin MacLeod (Captain Stubing), Jill Whelan (Vicki), Ted Lange (Isaac), Bernie Kopell (Doc), Lauren Tewes (Julie) and Fred Grandy (Gopher).
