A long-standing tradition when a ship gets its name and is ready to officially launch, it also gets a Godmother. In recent years, Godfathers have been included in the duties, and now, a Godfamily has been named.

The specially selected honorary individual(s) attends the christening ceremony to bless and name the ship, smash a bottle of champagne across the hull, and provide good luck.

When ships were smaller, the Godmother could personally crack the champagne bottle across the hull, but that is no longer possible on some of the newer, larger ships, due to their size. Instead, she or he (or they) will press a button or pull a lever that will release a bottle dangling from a rope, which swings over to the ship and smashes into the hull.

The list of famous personalities who have become ship Godmothers is long. Here are a few: Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge, (Kate Middleton), Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Helen Mirren, Sophia Loren, Jennifer Hudson, Mary Berry, Sharon Stone, Joanna Lumley, Whoopi Goldberg, Julie Andrews, Martha Stewart, and many more.

Godfathers include: Elvis Duran, and American rapper Pitbull.

The first ever Godfamily (named by Royal Caribbean in May, 2018) are actors Carlos and Alexa PenaVega, along with their son, Ocean.
